According to saxon there's just not enough sweet hobbit love in the films. While I agree there isn't quite enough hobbit love in Peter Jackson's vision I don't really think it's a needed addition...

Also Sam is a main character but he is not one of the MAIN protagonists...Frodo, and Eragon are. Followed by Gimlie and Legolas. Then Sam would be next.
Although that does hold true for Brookback mountain....god i hate that movie.
