my dad, has managed to download more viruses than you could find in a clap clinic.
now normaly i would re-format his p.c and be done with it.
but i would like to try to get rid of them without reformating. he is using windows xp.
can i get rid of them by going into safe mode and scaning in safe mode?
please advise in detail. i will be able to follow your instructions so fire away.

Whats your antivirus?

Go into safe mode and run it, quarantine as much as possible.

Then run Microsoft Anti-Spyware and adaware and spybot s&d and see what turns up.

Then come back with details!

everything picks them up microsoft anti spyware and my antivirus but they say they have quarrentined but they return.

Usually you have to disable system restore before doing a deep virus scan as many viruses hide there. Also go to trendmicro.com and run housecall.
Running in the safe mode is better if you can. Some systems won't allow it.

I Wish That I Had Disabled The System Restore First.
I Scaned With Spybot And Found 7 Nasties!

Keep the system restore closed till you get done with all scanning and rebooting and all that . Don't reset it till you are completely through with everything. Set scotty the watch dog up and he will warn of some program that is trying to attach itself to the registry.

winpatrol: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3380.html

It also has a nice startup manager for helping to get rid of some of those pests by removing them from the start up section.
and it is free or you can buy the upgraded version.
