an unnamed attack group that has been using malware designed to wipe computer hard drives — and the underlying “master boot record” (MBR) on the affected systems — of all data.

I know 7 or 8 does not use an MBR so it's possible that they are out dated on their systems too

Win7 uses MBR, unless you're on GPT-formatted disks.

Yeah, it's a BCD bootloader, but the BCD bootloader is still part of the MBR.

NTLDR is the legacy bootloader.
