PC To TV problem

hey guys, i bought a convertor to convert the signal from my s-video out on my computer to component, so now i can hook it up to my tv. but i have a problem, i can get the image on the computer to display fine, but the resolutuo differers between my tv, and my computer monitor, so i am not getting the full picture that is on my monitor, on my tv. is there any way i can change the resolution on the tv, to smaller, and keep the resolution the way it is right now on the monitor?

i want to be able to display the WHOLE desktop on the tv, not just a partial image....

also, when i play a dvd on my computer, the image shows up fine on my monitor, but on the tv the picture is black where the video is supposed to be playing... what is going on?
