xp pro and printers

i have an HP deskjet 690c printer and i've had no problems untill now. i reformatted my hdd about 3 months ago, full windows update and now when i try to install the printer i get an error message sayting that "operation could not be completed".

anyone know how i can get round this and install the printer?

i have a deskjet 695c (which always ask for 690c driver and mine works find i can send ur the driver if you wish

i've followed the instructions from the above link but it says
'the specified port is unknown'.
in the hardware manager it says all the ports are working and no problems. any more ideas?

i've got it to find the printer (uninstalled the printer port then rebooted) but now i get 'RPC sever available' message.
what is the RPC server?
