So how do Webcams work?

I'm moving abroad soon, would like to stay in touch with friends etc and was thinking about buying a webcam. What's the story? Do we both buy one, install it and away we go? Or is it (probably) not that simple. How do I dial someone? Or does that come with the webcam software?

A quick basic rundown would be very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Well you would need a webcam if you would like to see each other. They are usualy used with something like MSN or you can make calls if you have a microphone. This is done with some free software you can pick up.

Hope this helps.

Search google for free video cam software
Try to get a video setup that comes with a card to install in a pci slot-They work way better, less work for the cpu. Plus they usually have an audio and video input-You can copy vcr tapes or digital vcr movie camera to cd or dvd. using a vcr and computer video editing software and an input card Ive made money creating movies for people on dvd. You usually get software with the camera but alot of the time its sucky.

yahoo instant messanger also works with webcams. But you will need to pay to get their high quality webcam service.
