Sleep bad for a computer?

Well anything unsaved will be lost, but if you don't save something before you put it to sleep you deserve to lose it if the power cuts off... Sleep is great if you like to turn on the computer fast or keep programs opened, but don't expect it to save your unsaved data if the power cuts off, which for me at least is rare.

Rule of thumb that I gave to my friends:
  • Before you go to bed, sleep
  • If you have to cut power for some reason, hibernate
  • If hibernate doesn't work for you, shutdown
What I really do myself: leave computer on as is 24/7 for years

See now I was under the impression that sleep and hibernating all of the time or even just leaving the pc on will slow the machine down anyway because windows isn't designed for that. And to be honest, wear on the parts isn't an issue when like me you upgrade everything every 2 - 3 years.

Mossiac

Mossiac, what you said is true, for older Windows, which weren't particularly clean about garbage collection. Modern Windows are a lot better with garbage collection and memory management. The usual monthly reboots required for Windows updates tend to be enough to keep things working efficiently.
