My HP laptop with genuine Win7 freezes & this is displayed on the screen:
no OS, no HDD, press F2 for system check

After restarting this is displayed on the screen:
Windows detected error in shutting down
OPTIONS:
Repair your computer
Start Windows normally
Safe mode
etc...
etc..

I select the "Start Windows normally" option & everything runs fine afterwards.

This has occured two times & both the times movies were being played in genuine Power DVD 10

I had run Disk Check utility on C: drive & also defragmented it.

My questions are:
1> What may be the root cause of this?
2> How to fix this, so that this does not occurs again?
3> If i select the "Repair your computer" option, what files may i lose, if any?

1. It's tough to say without troubleshooting via process of elimination. You can start by running memtest (Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool) to confirm you don't have any memory issues. Next, I'd start with a fresh install of Windows, followed by replacing the hard drive if it persists. Next step would be to replace the system board if this all failed.

2. See #1

3. If you select "Repair your computer" option it will not delete any of your files. It may cause a software boot issue but you could always install the laptop drive into another computer and recover data. As always, before you start fussing with your computer, back up your data.

Thanks for the reply. I will try this.
BTW, no such error has popped up since i performed the disk check.
