Okay - so if your crew wipes, what does that do to ME3? If Jacob and Thane are dead at the end of ME2, how does that affect ME3? What about Tali and Garrus since they jump in with you?

Yeah, Edge pretty much described it. They basically had a "backup" for everyone. Someone else basically just takes their place. It sort of reminds me of The Walking Dead game. You make these decisions, but in the end it really doesn't amount to much except for a change in dialogue.
