It was actually the manual that made me realize it's PCI-E only.

i had downloaded the manual. but i stopped at the part where it said it supported sata m.2 ssd. if i had dug deeper, i would have found where it says m key. sorry and thank you for the help.

Probably not a bad idea to read the entire manual, get to know your board thoroughly in case any problems come up you might be able to have a reference

THe manual shouldn't say anywhere that it supports SATA M.2, as right at the top it says PCI-E only. An M key board will physically take a B + M key module, just won't provide lanes to the B side. You can see visuals here.
