I have a 2009 Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop that I had stopped using due to it being slow and I getting a faster PC.

It runs Windows 10.

It uses the AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58 processor.

I can get an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-68 for it, but am unsure which one I need.

This one is $24

This one says call for quote.

Or is there a better processor than those that will work and isn't expensive?

It's more of a want to find a use for it given I replaced the screen maybe 2-3 years ago. I figure maybe it would be useful for streaming music or some other simple tasks.

This laptop is technically way slower than that other Core 2 machine you were running for a bit. Total junker, and the IGP isn't even decent enough for retro gaming.

True, however I hate to trash it given it has a new screen.

Would it be possible to put Linux on it and get more use out of it that way?

It's pretty much E-waste at this point, but it doesn't hurt to toss an OS on it and see what'll work ok. Just don't put any money into it.

I've heard that certain flavors of linux can make older hardware useful again for certain things.
Absolutely, Linux can offer an after-life to older hardware. I suggest you try Linux Mint installed on an inexpensive Solid-State Drive (SSD). Their fast read/write speeds help the slower RAM & CPUs keep pace. See: https://linuxmint.com/ You'll have the option to download an image (ISO copy of the OS version you choose), "Burn" it onto a USB-drive, creating a "Linux-Live" version to try before install.
Currently I'm using an ACER ZG5 netbook from 2008 originally ruunning Win Xp, now Upgraded with Linux LMDE 6 faye which is light for under-powered devices. Linux LMDE would be a good fit for your Dell Inspiron.

I might try it at some point.

Currently using it so my dad can log into his online banking about once a month. Otherwise it sits unused.

Would Linux LMDE be able to run Windows programs?
