encripted works file locked.

I saved a large document on a free Microsoft Works download (stupid, I know). After decidiing that my laptop needed a change, I transfered all data on to an external hardrive. Now, to my shock horror, I cant retrieve any works files, theres alot!
All that can be seen is encrypted square boxes and other cyber signs FDPP, text, STSH etc.
A WPS File 398KB in particular I am desperate to open, I spent months on this.
I tried Control A, this took away alot of the symbols but left me with a square box beside every single letter of every word. Still unreadable.
As you might guess, a novice is a kind word for what PC skills I have. If you can help, please use layman basic terms.
I am struggling to find a Works download site and I am really nevous if I did, what might happen?
Please, I am desperate, any help or point in the right direction greatly appreciated.

i dont think the files were encrypted rather they were corrupted. the following link may help

Agreed if the external drive had malware or a nasty virus I am sorry to say but the chances of a rookie returning the files to their original state is rather slim. Have you tried a computer fixer?
