well, does your motherboard support dual-channel memory? if so, it won't run in dual channel if the memory sticks don't match. if it doesn't support dual-channel, then switching one stick for 1GB will help performance.
but no matter what you do, the memory is still DDR. DDR is not a state that the memory runs in. It refers to its architecture.
