What the hell happened to all the PC Repair jobs?

If you are excellent with PC Repair then why would you subject yourself to someone else to fill their pockets. I suggest you start your own business (in-house). Start small and think BIG!

You should start locally by handing out flyers and business cards. Putting a classified ad in the local newspapers and phonebooks. Getting as many word-of-mouth referrals as you can. It's not an easy task, but you can do it! You can do repairs and sell custom-builds at the same time. That's my advice, because you are still young, you may not need to worry about health coverage as much for yourself (and a family), therefore you can struggle for a while without it, until your business is off the ground.

If you would rather work for someone then the power is in your resume and your ability to communicate. Employers are human and you want to ask yourself...why would I give a person a call from their resume??? Why would I hire someone for a job??? Answer these questions and you are a step closer to securing a job. Finding a job takes dedication...you have to treat it as a job. Give yourself dedicated hours throughout the day at least Mon-Thurs. 9am-3pm...that's when you search online for a job, when you make new contacts, and when you schedule interviews. Your resume should be consise and keyword-rich...it may be worthwhile to have your resume professionally done. And you should submit your resume to at least 5 or more online job boards, including www.DataCenterLife.com :)

Good luck! I hope things work out for you.

Awesome advice, thanks man. I've been considering the whole pc repair in my own home thing, but people get weird about you having there stuff especially without papers and stuff to sign. I could come by there house to and do it, but I know I wouldn't like some 19 year old kid showing up at my house claiming he can fix say..... my plumbing. I would have to be pretty pushy letting them know that I know what im doing, and I hate doing that just because people start to regret calling you once they think your unsure of a problem. I mean I like working by myself, because you don't have to worry about jackass coworkers and boss's breathing down your neck, its just its alot of pressure I guess? Bleh I dunno, im definitly a social person, ive been a salesman for both circuit city and compusa but that would be different.

Well, first you have to start somewhere. Which means you should begin soliciting friends & family, while adhering to the previous advice.

As for a 19 year kid doing your computer repairs, that's fine with most. It is mostly about appearance and professionalism. A shirt and tie means a lot. Being professional means a lot. You should have them sign something, not only for their protection but for your protection as well. It can be a basic service agreement. Also, I notice you said Richmond...which I'm assuming Richmond V.A., this is a city and it has colleges...which can be your area of target. Pass out flyers or brochures at colleges and the best thing you can do is have reasonable rates, especially for college students....maybe even a student discount for those with a student ID. Find out what your competitors are charging...call around as a potential customer/client and find out their rates, then charge a cheaper rate.

It can be done!

I hope that helps!

I am sorta in a similar situation. I have my A+ Certification and I can't even get the geek squad to take me. The geek squad manager took this other jock-type guy who doesn't know a thing about computers just because the he's a friend of his sons' friend. I'm currently attending college, but in my area a college degree doesn't mean a thing...its all who your friends are. All my friends are still working food service, so that doesn't help me any.

I have done a bit of the PC repair work on the side, and it works great. And yes, its all about appearance and professionalism.

That actually is not that uncommon. Before experience...it's about who you know! Not what you know! My first break in IT was because I knew somebody...they told me they didn't care I didn't know a thing about computers, because they can teach me all that stuff, but they wanted someone who could get along with the current team....which I was a perfect candidate since I'm a people person. It was completely cluesless in the beginning but here I am 8 years later, doing my own thing and thensome, just because I knew someone who decided to give me a break.

That's why communication and making the right contacts is essential. Also, don't hesistate to take advantage of the consulting companies, third-party recruiters, and temp assisgnments. Just because it is not a permanent position doesn't mean it is completely useless. Sometimes there has to be dark clouds for the sun to shine through. If nothing else it will be another addition to your resume and overall experience.

Thresh :
Post your resume here if you don't mind.
Also:
Post your res on Monster.com and Dice.com
Make sure you update your resume EVERY day, even with just a slight modification like a period or comma.
Reason why: Everytime you "update" your resume it looks to monster and dice.com like a "new" resume. Which inturn sends the notification to the companies that are with monster/dice.

What kind of Certification do you have ?
Ever thought of taking a course for your MCSE ?
MCSE = GOLD in IT world right now.

Basically "you" and everyone else in your shoes are competing with Coleman College graduates that are willing to make 9 bucks an hour doing anything they can.

You have to be extremely patient.
Don't forget to post your resume please.
you can pm/email me and I will personally help you.

Sure, i'll post it for everyone. It's in a .doc format with pics and different text formats so it's going to be some mixed up text and alignment issue's.. Can I e-mail you a .doc copy?

This is just to give you another idea of a resume. It is a bit long but it details everything I have experienced. When job hunting this resume always got me in the door...of course I do update frequently but this was the basis.

The bottom section titled "Knowledge" is just a place to stuff all keywords...any product, application, or technology you have touched or have basic knowledge of. This is an important section when submitting to job boards because 90% of the time your resume will be found by the keywords used. Many companies use search software to sift through hundreds or thousands of resumes in their database...therefore the Knowledge (a.k.a. "keyword) section is essential.

Hopefully, this will give you some hint of how to spice your resume up.

I knew your resume would crush mine haha. Thanks I feel alot better!! Guess the trick is making what little you have on your resume look very attractive.

exactly... they don't want to read a Novel when they are looking for someone to hire. I would bulk all your skills into a manageable and easy to read group on the top of your resume.
