Just tried to install windows 7 home premium upgrade to my Acer Aspire laptop but it would not install due to lack of space on the hard disc. Now as I am pretty computer illiterate, having just taken it up on retirement, I am trying to clear up space on the disc but as far as I can I have cleared as much as I can and the system will not let me clear any more. However I do have a 500gig external hard disc connected with everything fully backed up there. What I am hoping for is if someone can tell me how to clear more space on the internal disc or if it is possible to install the upgrade on the external disc and have it work from there. Thanks a lot.

Start>Run>cleanmgr

Can do that. Also start uninstalling programs. Since those are what is taking up the majority of space.

You won't be able to install it on the external drive, you are going to have to get enough space on your primary hard drive to install it (20 gig).

Aside from programs you should move all personal files to the external. Use that for storage.
