Port Forwarding using a VPN.

What is the benefit of Port Forwarding and if I were to manually set up a Port Forwarding Address using a VPN Client or even with in my router, what would be the benefit of this.

I'm thinking from what I have read that Port Forwarding is what it says. You forward traffic to a specific port from the actual router or VPN Client Software but what impact would this have on say my I.P Address if I were able to forward for listening reasons.

Can anyone answer that even best to their ability as I have been told to enable port forwarding by my VPN Provider to listen for Traffic.

So that you can expose functionality on your network (i.e. a webserver, remote desktop, etc.). Keep in mind that then decreases the value that a VPN provides you with.
