802.11a is not compatible with 802.11b or g devices. There are multi-network devices that can connect to all, but they are costly and AirPort is not one of them. Most wireless devices that come with computers, as well as wireless hotspots and homenetworks will most likely be 802.11b. Wireless-a just doesn't have the ranges or compatibility needed of a home-network.

But just to clarify completely:
802.11b is a wireless network protocol assigned to the 2.4GHz frequency range and is rated for 11mbps (11 megabits per second, or about 1 3/8 MBps, or megabytes per second. )
802.11g is the newest upgrade to the 802.11b spec. It too runs on the 2.4 GHz frequency, but transmits 54mbps, or 6.75 MBps instead of 802.11b's 11 mbps. 802.11g is backwards compatable with ALL 802.11b networks so you will commonly see companies put the "802.11b/g" moniker on their products.
802.11a is a low range, high frequency wireless transmission specification. It operates on the 5GHz frequency and transmits at the same 54mbps as the 802.11g spec, but only goes about 15-30 feet from the base station which limits its function for consumer networks.
The Apple Airport Extreme is a proprietary card that is completely compliant with the 802.11g spec (as well as the 802.11b spec) and thus all wireless transmitters based on either spec. It will operate with ANY base sation from ANY company whose product is based on the 802.11 b/g spec.
