NETGEAR router blocking my internet access?

Apparently my NETGEAR router is blocking my internet right now, I have a verizon modem which does not appear to be attached to the router. I have unplugged the NETGEAR router from the outlet but somehow i lose internet access when i unplug the router even though my modem does not appear to be connected to the router?
How can i fix this and restore internet access?

I would contact Verizon to see if there's a work around, but this happened to me when I upgraded and found that my old router wasn't compatible with Windows 7. You might want to try the router through this: Windows 7 Compatibility: Software Programs & Hardware Devices: Find Updates, Drivers, & Downloads before you contact your ISP.
