"hiding" your IP address will not reduce your chances of getting spyware. Its you letting the spyware in, the problem is you.

-You need to stop pirating stuff, (if you are).

-Dont just install things because they are free, or your computer tells you that you "need" to. Its your computer, dont let it use you.

-Use firefox, if your using IE then you can mabey blame it a bit. Use Firefox instead.
Okay, really using Firefox probably won't decrease your chances of getting spyware or whatnot. I recommend Avant Browser. Even though it is based on the ever-dreaded Internet Explorer, it is faster, has more features and is more flexible. It also loads relatively fast, and has a built-in advertisement blocker... Now, I'm not saying Avant is the best. I like Opera too, Firefox is good too. It's just not *really* a matter of the browser, more of what website(s) you browse. For example, people browsing porn or whatever would probably end up with more adware and spyware on his/her computer...

About the "installing free programs", some free programs are reliable, others are pure spyware and/or adware. http://www.download.com is a good site to download free things because, before you download, you can view other people's experiences with that particular piece of software.

Here is a HYPOTHETICAL situation. I play poker at pokerstars.com but there was a misunderstanding and they blocked my computer from playing there. Would a proxy help out my situation?

Yes a proxy would help, but it will be much slower.
