If you would like Ubuntu Linux on your
WINDOWS WINDOWS WINDOWS (NOT MAC) computer, which looks like the screen shots below, then follow this tutorial!

Step One:

Get a flash drive. 8GB or higher is needed, USB 3.0 is preferred. (You can install Ubuntu with a smaller flash drive but it will lag and not work very well.
You can also use a DVD-R but for this method I am using a USB Drive.

Make sure you have 7 GB hard drive space (That's the least) and at least 512 MB of RAM. Make sure your monitor is capable of 1020p video, Internet Access and USB ports.

Step Two:

Right click on the sidebar option that says Computer and select properties. Look on the window that pops up until you see 32-bit operating system or 64-bit operating system. If you see 32-bit then install the 32-bit version of Ubuntu when you get to that step. If you see 64-bit then download the 64-bit version. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Step Three:

Download both of these files. Save the .iso in a folder in your downloads. Name the folder UbuntuSauce (You have to do this or the installation will fail)

You didn't actually have to save it in a folder or name it anything. Admit it it was funny though.

For 7zip download the 32-bit .msi or the 32-bit .exe, BUT IF you know that you have a 64-bit operating system then download the 64-bit x86 version.

[Ubuntu.iso]: Download Ubuntu Desktop | Download | Ubuntu
[7-Zip (Window Only)]:Download

Step Four:

Backup all the files on your flash drive and all important files on your disk. Then open the .iso file with 7-zip. After that click extract and extract the files from the .iso to your flash drive. This will take a while.

Step Five:

Check flash drive to make sure that there are a bunch of folders and files instead of just one .iso file. If there is one .iso file on it and nothing else then you did something wrong.

Step Six:

Windows 8/8.1 Instructions:
1) Check to make sure flash drive files are right, remember many files, not just 1 .iso.
2) Swipe right on screen with mouse to access charm menu. Click the power button and HOLD THE LEFT SHIFT KEY as you hit RESTART.
3) Wait for computer to turn off and back on.
4) When it comes back on it should be a light blue background with a bunch of Metro-Style Buttons. One should say "USB Flash Drive" and some other stuff on it.
5) Make sure you don't have any other USB Drives in, including wireless mouse sticks, so it knows to read from the Ubuntu Drive. (You don't actually need to remove wireless mouse stick but I'm superstitious like that)
6) Wait. This might take up to 10 minutes so don't freak out. If it takes more than 2 hours turn off your computer and go back to Windows and try again from step one after formatting your flash drive to fat32 or fat64.
7) You should see a purple windows cover your screen. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select "Try out Ubuntu without Installing".
8) Try out Ubuntu for a few minutes to see if you like it. REMEMBER YOU CANNOT run Microsoft Office or most Windows programs on your new Linux computer so try out LIBREOFFICE to make sure you like it. Also connect to WiFi.
9) IF YOU PLAN TO INSTALL UBUNTU ALONGSIDE WINDOWS This is the hardest part and it can DELETE Windows so follow instructions EXACTLY. Click the Windows button on your keyboard. A menu should open. Type GPARTED into.
10) Open Gparted. There should be either 3-4 big blobs on there. Ignore all the blobs but the biggest one, which is usually number /dev/sda2. If you have an HP computer then it is probably /dev/sda2 This is your Windows Partion.
11) Right click on the big blob (Otherwise known as the Windows partiton and select
re-size/move.
12) Check to see how much free space is on that partition. Free space is the darker color in the re-size menu. So drag the right side of the lighter color to the left. not to the right, to the right will delete Windows. Leave about an inch space inbetween the darker color and the edge of the lighter color if Ubuntu would become your Primary Operating System. If you want both to be equal leave about 3 inches of space.
13) Click Resize/Move and agree to everything that it says.
14) Now go to your desktop and click "Install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS"
15) Wait for it to load.
16) Bundle in 3rd party applications and Install Updates While Installing
17) If Install alongside Windows 8 option comes up then press it. If you want to dual boot and install alongside Windows 8 doesn't come up go to Step 17a. If you want to overwrite go to step E.
17a) THIS IS TRICKY if the only thing that comes up is replace current operating system and "Something Else" then click cancel. Go back to GParted.
18a) Right click on the grey area that opened up when you shrink the Windows 8 partition and select New. Name this partition UbuntuSauce.
18aa) If you want swap space shrink UbuntuSauce a few centimeters and make a new p

19a) Now re-follow steps 14-16 then click "Something Else" when you come to it.
20a) Last Step! Select the partition to install to "UbuntuSauce" or /deb/sda(whatever number UbuntuSauce showed up as in Gparted) then set mount point to /.
21a) I lied. If you don't know which one is UbuntuSauce then select the second big partition, NOT RECOVERY, the one called UbuntuSauce.
22a) Wait for it to download and make a cup of tea.
23a) Play around with Ubuntu.

STEP E:

ONLY DO THIS STEP IF YOU WANT TO DELETE WINDOWS AND ONLY USE UBUNTU. I WOULD HIGHLY NOT RECOMMEND THIS METHOD.

E) When it says "replace operating system with ubuntu" click Yes IF YOU WANT TO CLEAR YOUR HARD DRIVE AND ONLY HAVE UBUNTU ON IT. Good for new laptops, but Windows is nice when you really need it.

Windows 7:
1) Get to BiOS
2) Make USB Diskette top boot choice
3) Follow Steps 6-23a.
4) Enjoy Ubuntu!
