Desktop Display Problem

I suddenly have little black and grey squares for all of my desktop and start menu icons (Windows ME)...anybody have any ideas? I have restored the system to a point before the icons went crazy, and it didn't work. The crazy icons are appearing on two user profiles. Any help would be much appreciated!

Anubis...thanks for the recognition/compliment! Love that Floyd, man... Nothing new that I know of, but there are a few people using the same computer. I know my stepdad installed a new game that I got him on Father's Day on his side, but the icons didn't go screwy until much later.
Devlish...I believe that it's set to 256 colors on the main user's display...I'm at work and I'm receiving info from home (where the computer in question is).

You could also try downloading TweakUI and rebuilding your icons. It usually fixes and icon related problems I've had.
