OK, so go to both computers, click start, click Run, type "cmd", click OK, type "ipconfig /all" and then hit return.

It appears your desktop is 192.168.1.100, but run it again and let us know the IP of each.

Tell us what the IP address, DCHP Server IP, and the DNS Server IP is on both systems. Don't worry about posting a 192.168.x.x ip because it's an internal IP, and there is no way someone can use that ip against you.

ok for my desktop.....

IP: 192.168.1.101
DCHP Server: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: 204.127.202.19
216.148.227.79

laptop.....

IP: 192.168.1.100
DHCP: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 204.127.202.19
216.148.227.79

hmmm this is odd.....because yesterday i checked it like 5 times....and i was sure my ip for the desktop was 192.168.1.100 and the laptop had the 101....it somehow switched.....this is after powercycling my cable modem and router....

Yeah well that's fine, IPs can and will change.

So if you run "ping 102.168.1.101" from your laptop or "ping 102.168.1.100" from your desktop, it tells you "The network path was not found", but you can still connect to the Internet from both systems?

Try pinging the other systems IP address from each systems. Also try pinging your router 192.168.1.1

hmm i tried on the laptop and all i can get ping is for this IP and the router...

i havent tried it on the desktop but im guessing itll be the same

I have a dell wireless router that I use with my wireless pda, it was a real pain to get it set up so I could sync it with my work computer.

However, unlike yours it's not the main router for the network, it just has a short network cable connecting it to the main switch. I think I had to change it's setting from gateway to access point, but I don't know if that would kill it's routing ability, and if it can't route, it can't get you to the internet.

If I get a chance tonight before I leave, I'll set it up solo with just a computer and a wireless laptop and see If I can get them talking.

hmmmm, so you can ping the router but not the other systems. Interesting......

Well you definately can't share files between computers if they can't even see each other.

So the desktop has a hard line into the router while the laptop has a wireless connection with the router, correct?
