I can't recommend MSE enough, I run it on three computers and have installed it on a few friends' computers.

The point being is that i am not trying to stop anyone from using it. If you have gotten by for so long using it without any issues, then congrats. Really i mean that and not being sarcastic. But i know several people now that have had problems come up from the free version of AVG as well as the paid version cause of bad updates being pushed. I can say the same of McAfee and Norton as well. I have seen 1 report of BitDefender doing it as well. So it isnt like AVG is the only one. McAfee has had it happen as well. Several times.

If you like it and it works for you, continue to use it. Just know that the frequency that these "mistakes" happen is starting to grow. It might be worth considering something like Avast! or MSE. But in no way am i saying that is what you should do.
