2 x Pairs Ram Slots?

Hi,

Although I have fair bit PC knowledge and building experience, however what's the deal when a motherboard has 2 x pairs of ram slots often coloured coded, one set for example might be black and other blue or cream, I only usually deal with boards having just 2 slots putting matching modules in each.

If I got an older DDR3 board supporting say upto 16 or 32GB, would you then have to then have 4 x 4GB modules for 16 or 4 x 8 for 32, matching of course (timings etc.).

Channel A and channel B. You could put in there whatever the highest capacity the board supports (or more sometimes if you're lucky).
