The Major is a full cyborg. She is capable of connecting her organic brain to the internet through her cybernetic body.
Organic humans also have cybernetic enhancements and are able to connect also. They both use avatars to represent themselves while in cyberspace. In this episode she is hunting down The Laughing Man. The entire 2 seasons are very out there as far as tech goes but the stories are quite good. Well worth a look.
But to answer your question, we're headed in that direction but it's going be decades before we get close to fabricating a cyborg body capable of doing what the Major and her crew can do. Despite the kickass story line, it's anime.

I didnt mean cyborg bodies
I meant virtual reality chat rooms.
but we do have few biofeedback prosthetics already. Basic ones but they are here already.
And the biofeedback computer control as well. In early stages.
Just not as connected as the cartoon.
