There are still the sytem restore disks for the PS3 and It wouldnt hurt for him to try the disk.
so far, he has put in the new hard drive and keeps getting errors.

OP hasn't come back since he posted that he was going to buy a new HDD, which was just yesterday - not sure where you're seeing he's still getting errors.
