Switch or Hub?

Yeah it just means the switch you bought is unmanaged and doesn't provide the computers with any information other than an IP.

Okay what is the difference between a switch and hub? I want to start hosting some LAN parties but am confused on this. Also what would be better to use a switch or a hub? I want to give the few computers internet as well as connecting them to play games.

A switch is layer 2, Data-link layer. It routes packets via a mac address table. Have to make sure you have your STP running though or loops can happen and lock up your net. (STP is defaulted on)

A hub is layer 1, all it is is a splitter. Every packet flowing in is routed to everyone, if the packets get there and its not the right workstation, it comes right back. Therefor there is a lot of traffic
