I'm trying to block my sons computer from the internet and don't see his computer listed under our personal network when I go to my router setup (192.168.1.1). Is there a way he can hide his PC so I can't see it? How do I block just his PC (not our other 4) from accessing the internet (other than unhooking his ethernet cable in the basement)? It's a desktop using ethernet connection and an Actiontec router.

This thread MAY be locked, just giving you a heads-up.

If you have Vista just go into the admin account and you can lock out his computer from the Internet. If you just have XP you'll have to go the more extreme route of uninstalling his WiFi/Ethernet ports and making him a limited account (so he can't enable / reinstall the drivers needed).

Other option would be to go into your router configuration and block all internet traffic unless from a certain MAC address. This depends on your router and the firmware that comes with it.

This kid looking at porn or something? Or his he just being punished. You don't have to tell me, I'm just curious. I guess you could try setting a wep key or some type of password thing if it will let you, and he won't be able to access the router if you don't tell him the key.

Well I found his computer, I just had to hit F5 (refresh). He's not looking at porn, just ALWAYS on the computer, doesn't do chores or help around the house, and he's not getting up for school on time b/c he's been up all night gaming on the internet.

Now... for some reason, when I block his internet on our router settings, it still doesn't stop him from accessing the internet. I tried blocking the other 4 PCs in our house and it blocked them all. I finally had to go to the basement and unplug his ethernet cable from the router. Any ideas why the router config settings didn't work?

"If you just have XP you'll have to go the more extreme route of uninstalling his WiFi/Ethernet ports and making him a limited account (so he can't enable / reinstall the drivers needed)." We do have XP Pro on the main PC that I'm on. How do I make him a limited acct? Can I do this from this PC or do I have to use his? Thanks for the help.

Well if your computer is separate from his, you'll have to create an admin account on HIS computer and make him an account that is a normal user. Then log onto the admin account and disable the ethernet drivers (all of them to be safe). Logout and then he has to log into is normal user account to do anything.

I would really suggest purchasing something like netnanny which can limit internet usage times to specific hours of the day. Vista can also do this but a 3rd party software would be cheaper.

Honestly if it was my kid I would just take the computer away. Playing games is fine, **** staying up late at times is fine but once it effects your school and home life (chores, family time, etc) the computer has to go. Live without it. If you prove over a months time you can do both (gaming and living a life) you can get the computer back. I'm sure he's an intelligent kid, so unless you physically remove the entire computer he probably will find ways around what you do to limit is Internet usage.

Again to each his/her own, and please don't take offense to my suggestion. I'm not telling you how to raise your child, i just think that taking it away will probably be the only choice you have (extreme, easy and to the point).

what you could do is also set your router to only allow the computers you want to connect by setting the specific mac addresses...so only the computers who's mac addresses you have registered with your router will be able to get on the internet...

Yep, mac blocking. Some newer Linksys routers also have features that only allow net access during certain time blocks. Or if the router is in a specific secure location you can always unplug his ethernet cable from that location and leave it hooked to his pc.

I have to agree with Lexluethar, Just about anything you can and will do he will find a way around if he is a smart kid. Do your neighbors have wireless internet? When I was younger and doing almost the same thing my mom took away the wireless router (i had set it up she didn't know anything about it other than it gave me internet).. Well, my computer picked up and instantly connected to a neighbors router that was the same brand as mine, i didn't even notice it was gone till she walked in my room and was like "How are you on the internet?" All we could do after that was laugh. Netnanny can be gotten around with some tech savvy skills and so can other programs like that.

In my opinion your best bet is either a router that allows time control (mine is a WRT350N) and it has the option though I have never used it, take his computer away completely, or something like his monitor (can't exactly game without a monitor), or the classic butt beatin.

As others have said, not telling you how to raise your child, but my opinions and experiences.

Yeah, and it should be able to block anything bad as well, which is a plus.

What I did was to turn off DHCP and set static addresses for the computers I wanted on the internet. Then set filters for ALL the other addresses except for the router. Only way he would be able to get an address would be if one of the other computers was off and he used that IP.
