Weird sound issue in older game

I have an older game called Trespasser which I have played for years. The last time I reinstalled XP, the game doesn't have sound anymore. I have the latest sound drivers and the latest video drivers. When I click the button in the game config for audio the slider is always all the way down. I move it up, click OK and go right back and the slider is down again. I have no idea why it keeps doing this. I have uninstalled/reinstalled the game a dozen times and it doesn't change a thing. Do you think I need an OLDER audio driver instead of a newer one?

Edit: Turns out I already have the older driver. And the newer driver. There is only ONE. Good LORD...Maybe I need a real sound card instead of onboard...

sound card > a cpu at makeing sound (impossible) > onboard sound

Being more serious, it's unlikely a sound card would make it more compatible. I think it's just driver issues as you have already stated.
