XP won't load icons or task bar (Virus?)

I was able to get into Safe Mode and set back the system to a restore point. Works fine now. Just hope my friend replaces her hard drive before it fails utterly. Yes, she still uses AOL but she also has DSL from CenturyTel. Old habits die hard with her so I guess she was just hanging on for old times sake.

Thanks to all of you for your help. You were just what I needed when I got stuck.

Jules-help!, see if you can get into Safe Mode too and use system restore. It took out the update that AOL did and the one that QuickTime installed. Both of them together had caused my friend's Dell to crash. And, Good luck.

HI, thanks for the reply. I did manage to get into safe mode eventually & use the restore. I also did a good clean up while I was there.,
