I am shopping for a new laptop for school as my 4 year old HP is just about dead. When I bought my old one from Circuit City I thought I was getting a decent gaming laptop because they said it had a "dedicated graphics card and memory" but it turned out only barely being able to play flash games online.

I have decided to go with either ASUS or another HP. Here's my wish list: i7 processor, 15inch(ish) screen, and decent gaming possibilities. I don't expect to be able to play Starcraft 2 in max settings (I have a desktop for that) but I would like to at least be able to play. I plan on spending between $800 and $1000

This is what I found:

HP dv6-6180us:
Newegg.com - HP dv6-6180us Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory DDR3 750GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi AMD Radeon HD 6770M

ASUS N53 Series N53SV-A2:
Newegg.com - ASUS N53 Series N53SV-A2 NoteBook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory DDR3 1333 750GB HDD 7200rpm BD Combo NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M

I just don't know which is better, how to compare mobile cpu's and gpu's, and whether or not there is something else out there that will give me better bang for my buck. Any recommendations?

Dedicated does not always mean better. If it is a low-range card, it could still be a crappy card, although it is dedicated.

To check for mobile cpus and gpus, I go by: FAQ / Tips / Technics - Notebookcheck.net Tech

I would not go with a HP. They are closing out their computer end very soon. Support would lessen.

Newegg.com - ASUS G Series G53SW-XN1 Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M

That one has a better GPU than the HP or the ASUS. Meets the CPU of the HP. 15.6" 6GB DDR3 RAM, Well, just look at it. Looks like an excellent deal, performance vs buck.
