The Desktop Folder has been deleted and cannot be restored

We am using WindowsXP. The folder should have been copied to an external backup HDD but it was "cut" - how this was done I do not know!!!!
When the laptop is Powered up the only icons that appear are "My Docs", "My Computer", "My Network Places" and "Recycle Bin".
I tried to copy the complete Desktop folder and its contents from the Ext HDD back into the "c:\Docs&Settings\name" folder. THis was done, but still none of the files showed on the laptop's desktop.
Any advise? Tks Michael

Your best option, if available, is to use a System Restore point.

Tks Mac123; I did try this to the last 3 restore points and it did not make any changes - asked me to go back but I stopped after 3 points thinking that this was not a resolution. I will try some more restore points. Tks again!
