A poster before (obviously a mac fan) stated that if you don't want crashes or viruses get a Mac. Well that is just a untrue statement. I have seem Mac's crash programs just as much as Windows or Linux GUI based apps do. Apple Safari being a major offender of unexpected program crashes. Viruses exist on all platforms too. How well the vendor keeps up with patches and updates varies of course. Granted Windows has new holes being discovered on a daily basis, who is to say that a hacker tomorrow morning won't discover a big security flaw in Mac OS Tiger that just cripples it.
Bottom line, there is no "better" operating system. You really need to evaluate how you plan on using your computer. Either for just doing school work and watching and listening to music. Or running a public server etc etc.
