plug and play is acting up windows xp

i replaced a hard drive and screen on my dads IBM t42 type 2379
updated whatever drivers i found from windows and ibm webpage

plug and play havent worked since.
we have to manually install all the drivers for every single device and thumbdrive we use

i checked the reg string like suggested in some help forums
theres no "devicepath" there at all


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion the item 'DevicePath' points to '%SystemRoot%\inf'. Additional items, separated by semikolons, are ok but '%SystemRoot%\inf' has to be one of them.
Then delete the file C:\WINDOWS\inf\infcache.1 - XP will recreate it.



i uninstalled all USB controllers and restarted
got a bunch of yellow balloons
clicked update driver and it reinstalled the drivers but now shows "other devices" unknown device for all the usb controllers that i just installed
after clicking again update driver it installed all of them
and now i have:
4 usb root hubs
and 4 intel 82801db/dbm usb host controllers

no luck
just plugged in data traveller and it shows in other devices but driver not installed

open services.msc and make sure the plug and play service has started and is set to automatic

lol wtf. it was set to manual. good advice .
but unfortunately it didnt fix it.

now i can hear the sound when device is plugged and unplugged but it doesnt install drivers and it doesnt show up in my computer drives.
