needless click 1
I went to a Linux install fest at college. A bunch of nerds tried to install Linux on my laptop but it failed horribly. Now upon starting up the computer, I get this black screen with some complicated text. I need to click Esc key in order to start Window's XP. How do I just start XP automatically?

needless click 2
For some reason, I now have to click my user name on the Win XP start-up screen before I can type in my password. Before, it was automatically focused on the text box.

"needless click two" is a good thing for security you want that. To solve your esc problem use to XP recovery console.

1) why is it higher security?
2) I don't know how to use recovery console.

Go to control panel and select how users log off, reboot, then go back in and swtich it back to the way you like it and see it that fixes it..

When you get to the desktop, to go start, run, type msconfig, then go to the boot.ini file and click check all boot paths and delete the linux one. It sounds like to me linux is corrupted to it tell you to delete it when you click check all boot paths.
