Mandrake Linux 9.2 - trying to connect to my ISP

Aaaaaaaargh! How difficult can this be??????

I'm trying to set up Mandrake Linux 9.2 to connect to BT-Yahoo using dial-up neworking. I can't find any GUI type tools but (after 2 hours of reading FAQs etc) came across minicom. Minicom finds my modem, dials the number then dumps me off with a NO CARRIER message.

I can't believe how difficult Linux makes it to connect to the net. The Mandrake docs keep mentioning connecting to the net to get updates/help but *doesn't* f'ing tell you how to get on the net in the first place. I'm not being a troll but at least in Windows I can create a DUN connection in a few seconds. I am determined to get Linux working on my Dell D800 laptop but am slowly realising it is going to bloody difficult. No sound, no internet, no widescreen, no usb hard drive - it goes on and on. I've been using computers for 21 years so am pretty PC savvy - if I'm having so many probs with Linux how the hell is Joe Public going to deal with it? I'm not surprised Microsoft do so well - they make it easy!
