HELP with 4G modem and "Default gateway is not available"

Hello everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this.

This problem is driving me crazy.

I'm using a 4G (WiMax) modem to access the internet. I plug it in via USB. The brand is Renmax (don't bother googling..) model REN6000. I'm using Windows 7 32 bit. When I connect the modem or turn on the computer while the modem is connected, it usually detects it as a new public network. So I'm on like public network # 32 now. It doesn't recognize it as the same network. But that's not the problem. I use 192.168.0.1 to access the modem through my browser.

It's a wireless modem, and I get a good signal and strong connection. If i'm doing just one thing online, like playing a video game online, or checking e-mails etc; everything goes well. Even if i download a large file it still works fine.

Here's the problem: If I try to do a few things at once, like opening several windows in my browser, my internet stops working. When I resolve, it says "Default gateway is not available" and it fixes it and it starts to work again. Sometimes it doesn't fix it though. Sometimes it says "DNS not available". I occasionally have to unplug and replug the modem for it to work again. It doesn't make sense to me because if i'm downloading something for hours even, it works like a charm; but it's when i'm doing multiple things it starts to screw up. Sometimes one website will have a lot of links in it or something, and it will cause my connection to stop working.

How do I fix this?!

If you need more info, please ask!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sounds to me like this is more of a computer issue then a medum issue.

When was the last time you did a cleanup of your computer? Go into internet options, select settings under browsing history, select view files, then highlit and delete every thing.

Also, do a defrag, do both of these at least once a week if not more. This will help stableize things.

There are other things you can also do, make sure your malware/virus is up to date, etc.

Good luck

I think it might have to do with using USB. Since it's a serial bus it transfers data in these manners

isochronous transfers: at some guaranteed data rate (often, but not necessarily, as fast as possible) but with possible data loss (e.g., realtime audio or video).

interrupt transfers: devices that need guaranteed quick responses (bounded latency) (e.g., pointing devices and keyboards).

bulk transfers: large sporadic transfers using all remaining available bandwidth, but with no guarantees on bandwidth or latency (e.g., file transfers).

it might be that which ever transfer type you're using, doesn't deal well with multiple queries and as a result it looses connection

Is it possible to connect the devices with ethernet?

Thanks guys for your replies.

I also think it's a computer issue and not a modem issue. I'm pretty sure my computer is virus/malware free. My anti-virus is up to date; i'm pretty careful with these types of things.

It's not possible to connect through ethernet; the modem is a USB stick.

Peter, could you elaborate on how my modem isn't able to handle multiple queries? How does that work exactly?

Well it depends how the device is doing transfers to the PC. If it's sending queries for multiple pages it might overloading the usb port and just dropping the connection. It makes sense from a theoretical point of view that the modem can only handle one or two requests at a time, and for the most part usb is limited to a set amount of queries. Think of keyboards, USB keyboards don't have NKRO (infinite key roll over) it's limited to like 4 or 6 key presses and to get more it's all driver/software based so it's not true to the port.

It looks like (from a ghetto translation and the only mention of it on some lybian forums) that there's a logging feature on the device settings. Can you enable that and then recreate the issue and post those? that might help figure it out...

These are the files i'm able to view:

so it looks like it fails because you don't have a username/password.. but it worked when you first connected, so I'm honestly not sure at all why it drops your connection.. The only thing I can think of is that it's the modem and it's an issue with the firmware. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there's any kind of support site at least not in English.. Check if there's any firmware update.

Modem sounds crappy. USB modem should work just fine. If it's having issues with DNS, default gateway all the time that is a modem/router/server issue. Normally I would suggest checking the settings on your home router, but as it's a 4G Modem they are designed to be plug and play, it's all through DHCP, there should not be a problem.

I suggest seeing if you can replicate the issue by using the modem on another computer. If you can, replace it with a good brand 4G modem like Huawei.
