Would Ubuntu work something like that?
I stumbled across it while googling stuff, and at this point, I figure I can just use that to move my data onto an external harddrive and then restore the computer to factory settings.

Yes you could use a LiveCD of Ubuntu to move your data and then just restore your PC. That is always a option.

you were giving a link to a download. just use it to do a system restore. it takes a cuople of minutes. then if that don't work you can use it to copy your documents to another drive. it's easier to use than a Linux disc as it has a windows interface
