Every time I try to open a Windows Media File, Avast kicks in and tells me something about a malicious URL. The files will not play.

What has URL's got to do with playing a Windows Media File?

This is the first time that Avast has ever let me down badly. I don't know what to do.

Have you checked the URL with onlinse scanners to make sure that it is a known malicious URL? Avast could be protecting you from viewing a file that can infect your system.

Media files can contain data that causes a browser to open, and to visit malicious sites, it's a common issue if the media was obtained from P2P software such as Kazaa/Limewire/Frostwire/Bearshare.

just a shot in the dark, but have you enabled your OS to show hidden extensions? are you sure you arent trying to execute "song".wma.exe?
