I want to be able to play and watch vhs on my computer (fujitsu lifebook n series). Where ever I try to get help with this, the information is only about converting vhs to dvd via computer, or being able to edit vhs on computer. What cords/ cards are necessary? Are there any download-able free programs for this?

I had something like this set up at one time. My VCR had RCA output as well as coax, i"m not sure what to tell you if your VCR only has coax.

Also my video card (GeForce4 Ti 4600) can do s-video in/out, if you don't have a video card capable of video in, you will need some type on add-in card to do that.

Most PC's have an audio line in, or you might get away with pluging it into the mic jack.

Items I used:
RCA cord with left/right audio plus video (white/red/yellow)
Stereo RCA to 1/8" mini jack
RCA to s-video converter

Connect the stereo RCA cord to the VCR (white=audio left, red=audio right, yellow=video out). Connect the white and red RCA jacks to the RCA-to-mini converter and plug that into your audio line in on your PC. Plug the yellow RCA jack to the s-video converter and plug that into the video card.

After that I could watch and record VHS on my PC.
