Wireless Router Problems

I recently got a laptop heading into my first year at college....and I got a wireless router to establish a connection for me to use at home and what not....well from what I was told it would take about 5 minutes...and my friend came and helped and couldnt get it to work, as 2 hours passed. The computer tells me there is a wireless connection but the internet browser does not function whatsoever. Any tips/suggestions???

When you say the internet browser doesn't function, do you mean that it won't even load, or just that when you go to websites it doesn't do anything?

If it's the latter, check the IP address settings on the adapter (command promt -> ipconfig /all) and make sure that it's either using DHCP or that it's assigned properly.
