Valve Responds to Left 4 Dead 2 Ban

Valve's VP of Marketing says that the whole team is "pretty bummed" over the news that Left 4 Dead 2 is banned in Australia. I wonder how the first L4D was approved down under while the second one ended up getting banned?

Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification refused to classify Left 4 Dead 2 due to its "realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence" and gore, effectively banning the zombie shooter sequel as unrated games cannot be sold down under by law.

If this is legal Austalia needs to revise its legal system. What do they do about porn lol? That all banned? In America, this would infringe on the 1st Amendment.

I live in Australia. Basically there is no 18+ rating here for games, even though there is for movies. I forget exactly why but it isn't a big deal seeing there are numerous Australian Online stores that import uncut games for PC.
As far as porn is concerned that is not banned at all because it is classified as a movie. Not that it would be a big deal if it was banned as none of the internet is blocked like it is in China etc.

A game like this doesn't need 18+ though because it doesn't have any sex or anything. 17+ should be fine.

You forget that Aus. is pretty strict with its game ratings; they didn't like Fallout 3 because you could be addicted to drugs in the game if you used too much.

Yeah, that is pretty lame how they changed the game just for Australia. It would be better just to give them a different version. Australia shouldn't be able to dictate game content for the whole world.

The same thing could be said of the EU dictating how Windows should be for the world. Sometimes it is easier and more cost effective for the change to be made completely than to product a single version for a single place.

It is all about the money. Period end of story.
