PC Will not Boot because of Ubuntu?

Hello all--

I am a newbie here on this forum, and I was wondering if any of you could help me out with a little problem I seem to have aquired after the installation/uninstallation of Ubuntu on my PC.

My main OS is windows xp, but recently a friend told me to try Ubuntu.

Windows is/has been installed on my main hard drive, so I decided to add an additional 10GB hard drive I had laying around for the sole purpose of installing the Ubuntu OS. I have since installed it......and yesterday decided to delete it.

Now, for some reason I can't log into windows anymore, even after wiping the drive that Ubuntu was installed on clean (deleted partition and reformatted), and unplugging it completely from my PC.

I am receiving an error message that says this:

grub loading stage 1.5

grub loading please wait.....
error 17

I am very confused, because Ubuntu was not installed on my main hard drive at all.

If anyone knows anything about this subject, any suggestions would appreciated in gargantuan measures!!!

Right, that is becuase when you deleted it, you deleted the GRUB Bootloader, the way to repair this, is to put in your windows CD, and boot to the CD, then when it starts up, press "r" which will take you to the recovery console, the type "fixmbr" which is the command to rewrite a new master boot record. I have had this error, and that works for defs for me on all my PCs!

Thanks a lot man. I'm going to give this a shot (if I could only find my windows xp disk ).

Carrying out this process will not erase my hard drive or anything crazy, will it??

Okay--

I just tried booting from my recovery disk and the only options i have when it loads is to press "o", which will completely wipe everything out, or to press "r" which will restart my PC......then I'm back to square one.

The recovery disk isn't a Windows disk ... its a fake, made-up thing that companies like Dell and HP give you instead of a real Windows disk. Looks like you need to download a real Windows disk and burn it, then try it. That or go spent $100 on a copy of Windows that you already own.

I don't think it matters which version of XP, the bootdisk should work, but this is just a full list from M$.

Probably takes like 6 floppy, and all you have to run is fixmbr and fixboot and you'll be good.

Does FDISK /MBR from 98 fix XP partition? Never knew that...

Law, the mbr is not on any partition. It is a little sector in the beggining of the harddrive that contains the bootloader.

What i did was re-install Ubuntu, and now I can log back into Windows......I guess before I uninstall it next time I'll have to learn how to do it without deleting the bootloader.....................
