Laptop speaker questions..HELP!!

Alright, Im using a Sony Vaio lap top that is about a year old with Windows XP of course. I purchased some Creative 2.1 speakers so that I could actually listen to some music. So I hook them up, but I am only getting sound from the sub and whatever speaker I hook into the left speaker jack. Both speakers work fine, but only one will play and thats the one hooked into the left speaker jack. The sub and everything else works fine! Ive tried hooking up the factory speakers from my moms computer and it does the same thing. PLEASE HELP! What do I need to do?

Either your cabling is faulty (The right side cabling)
or your sound card is Mono.

How can I check if my sound card is mono?

Do you have the sub plugged into the right side you mean?

Am I guessing correctly?
You an adapter yes?
and you plug the left speaker in L and the right speaker in R and the sub in the sub correct?
Then you plug the lead into your laptop (which is just one socket)?
