so is kubuntu the same as KDE?
if so, is there a difference between kubuntu and ubuntu?

as said before, KDE and Gnome are just window managers.

Kubuntu and Ubuntu are essentially the same, they just use the two different window managers.

all the programs you can use on one, you can use on the other.
