Internet service provider blocks my router but not my computer... wtf?

Thanks. It turns out the steps I quoted above can be shortened to simply power cycling the router every time it gives out. I'll try installing some different firmware when I get fed up with it.
 
Open Source firmware tends to work much better if the router isn't crippled like the WRT54G version 5 is.
the WRT54GL was made in response to people not buying the WRT54G after it was crippled, which has 16MB RAM and 4MB ROM.

Or there's the Asus RT-N16, which has 128MB RAM and 32MB ROM. I'm using one of these with Tomato.
