Have you tried popping a different hard drive into the Dell to check to see that the IDE is good? Do you have the drive plugged into the #1 socket (if it has more than one (doubtful))?

What is the model of the Dell? Hard to look up the specs on one without that.

I gave up on it, because the windows installation was taking hours and hours. I called my uncle and asked him some questions, and he said that with the dell he use to turn the computer on and off 10-15 times daily!!. So I guess that contributed to it's ultra slow performance.
It was a Dell Dimension 8200.

the proc is fine the video is fine but with 128mb of ram that is whats killing you windows xp is happy with 256mb-512mb 128mb = really really slow upgrade the ram.

try using the windows cd and doing a full format of the disk (not quick format) if you havent already tried.
