no offence, but you are kidding right? do you know what the odds are of getting a bad batch of discs vs. a damaged IDE controller as the culprit are. to be honest neither do i but i'll wager that they favour the former. don't blame the controller just because the discs are new. you point out that you only tried testing a cd drive yet apparently the main problem is with dvd's. before making any conclusion test the dvd-drive in another pc, also try using the same discs that fail in your pc and some others. if the dvd drive works in the second computer then you should look at power supply or ide controller as the causes
