Hey guys, I have my dissertation next year, and so far have no idea what I want to focus it on. I see a lot of people doing things that enter other fields (especially fields like medicine), but I don't really know where to start.

Obviously I'm not going to ask for topic suggestions (and i kind of need something new, so google can't help me), but does anyone have any tips for thinking of one? Should I forget about applying compsci to other subject areas, or should i start reading into interesting areas of study?

I know i'm a bit early on this, but I at least want to have decided on some form of ball park of what I want to focus on, instead of right now, where i'm completely bewildered.

Thanks,
Danny

Would trying to write an AI that beats the turing test be too generic?
And good idea, i'll test it against the long term effects on the brain of trying to teach your elderly relatives how to use a smartphone ;)

Already been done - the Unreal Tournament 2004 bots were some of the first to do so, IIRC.

Damn, i'm 12 years behind the times :omg:
I guess i'll just have to do more research into AI and hope I get inspired :)

There's a myriad of choices you could go with if you went the Machine Learning route, AI isn't quite so interesting yet IMO. Whether it be space, medicine, porn, entirely up to you :p plenty of material available
