China Bans 50 Games

BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- China has banned 50 illegal electronic games in a recent government probe into the electronic publication and software market.

As part of the effort to protect intellectual property rights and create a good environment for Chinese youth, the State GeneralAdministration of Press and Publication (SGAPP) together with the anti-porn and illegal publication offices, created a list of 50 illegal electronic games in a nationwide check-up on electronic publication and software markets.

Liu Binjie, deputy director of the administration and director of the state anti-porn office said here Wednesday that the Chinesegovernment in 2005 will focus on combating illegal publications. This especially concerns pirated textbooks, electronic publications and illegal journals that will have negative influence on the youth.

Among the 50 illegal games, 26 are pirated game software including Age of Mythology: the Titans, The Sims 2, Manhunt, FIFA 2005, Battlefield Vietnam and Painkiller: Battle out of Hell. The remaining are illegally distributed foreign games including Conflict Vietnam, Vietcong: Fist Alpha and Devastation.

The administration has called for relevant departments across the country to clean up the electronic publication and software markets, confiscate any of the 50 games if found and hold the publishers, producers and distributors of these games accountable.

China, which first launched a campaign against pornographic andillegal publications in 1989, has been carrying it out for 16 years.

So are they cracking down on pirated games and software or those titles themselved? I'm kinda hazy on whats goin on here. It sounds like pirated stuff, but whats with the porn etc thing?.. Kinda tired so.. not gettin it entirely. (although China's recent rise has to do with their Capitalistic attitudes and rules. whereby they curb almost no expansion and are letting it rise at an incredible rate, that I think may very well usurp the US throne of world economic domination, sometime sooner than we think). While this expansion sounds good they have been devastating the environment for many years and are just now starting to understand the implications and consequences.

Good ol US of A wouldnt do that...or maybe they wouldnt...OR THEY BETTER NOT!

Alot of games nowadays (Ghost Recon 2, Mercenaries) are picking on the N. Koreans, and so they are banned from those N. Korea.

I cant imagine why the Chinese would ban the games other than that fact that some are illega.

theyre illegal because they go against the chinese government's views on life. killing communists in the vietnam war in the most obvious. dictartorships and communist regimes have always done this with any form of information. newspapers are editted, tv, movies, video games etc etc.

hell, most of north korea didnt hear about that train explosion a year or so back until months after it happened. you get the info they want you to when they want you to.

theyre breaking down on pirated copies of games that are already deemed illegal for the views they express.

and yeah, they can thank america and the rest of the "west" for their capitolistic growth, they were headed the way of the ussr not too long ago. but why not make money off human rights violations and enviromental destruction! thanks to the way they cotrol information we can sell products to them and buy from them as cheap as the south east asian sweatshops without all the exposure! (<---sarcasm)

remember the good ole days of trade embargoes and communism being deemed bad...

Last time I check, the Good ol US of A has the UNCLASSIFIED Film And Literature Rating.

This means, you can publish (almost) anything and legally distribute it. It just means you are limited on your distribution and advertising channels when you are distributing something that is UNCLASSIFIED.

I know that is how it works with videos and DVD. It's would not surpise me if that is the same with computer games.

Most of our stuff that get banned or held back is due to excessive violences or excessive gore or pr0n.
And there has been a few times where I have seen EB Games pull down games off the shelves due to this.
Examaple :- GTAIII when it first came out.

North Korea lives in their own little world. When do we hear anything from them. Only when it effect the Japan, South Korea or the rest of the world.

saw a documentary of life there before the started requesting aide from the red cross and such. instructional videos on how to eat the grass and tree bark from the mountain-sides. people kidnapping small children for food etc etc... rough life when your government only gives a damn about itself
